2019 Workshops

Crown
Dona Nazarenko

6+ hours
Intermediate
Class Fee: $44

Have fun doing overlays and see how choosing one of these can change your next basket where you can design your own basket.  This starts with a round base and goes straight up the sides, when you are done add overlays in various colors or just one.  Some might not finish all overlays in class but will be able to do them at home.

Dimensions:             9” wide by 7” high

Bring an awl and packing tool along with your regular weaving tools.

Swirl
Marie Kasparian

6 hours
All levels.
Class fee:  $70

You will learn how to weave a Nantucket-style basket using an “even” number of staves without chase-weaving.  This technique will create a continuous swirl around the basket.  Materials used are cane weavers and staves.  The base and one piece rim are cherry, finished with a bone plug.  Beginners may not finish in allotted time but will be shown how to attach the one-piece rim.

Dimensions:             3” wide by 2 ½” high

Bring regular basket tools along with xuron clippers (available at Del’s Nantuckets)

Sculptural Coiled Sweetgrass on a Wood Base
Dianne Stanton

6 hours
All levels
Class fee: $100

Students will begin by choosing a turned wooden “bowl” for the base of their basket.  Many of the bases available are turned from tree burls.  Using waxed linen, you will attach fragrant sweetgrass to the prepared base with plain or straight stitch.  Students will learn how to add foundation and stitching materials as well as shaping and adjusting stitches for the size of your basket.  Class will also include discussion on the harvest and processing of sweetgrass as well as choosing and preparing a base made from other materials such as a gourd, driftwood or birch bark.  Most students will finish in class or will have the knowledge to do so at home.  This is a fun and relaxing class for students of all levels.

Dimensions will vary:           Sample is 5 ¼” wide by 3” high

Bring an awl, scissors, small towel, spray bottle and an Ott-light if you have one.

Colonial Candle Basket – Class Cancelled
Karen Ziino

4-5 hours
All Levels
Class Fee:  $40

Students will use natural and dyed reed and seagrass.  They will learn to weave the base with reed, up-ending of staves and shaping the sides, making and inserting the side handle prior to attaching the rims and finish with lashing.

Dimensions:              4 ½” wide by 11 ½” high with handle

Bring standard basket making tools along with a bucket and spray bottle.

Shaker Tape Foot Stool
Suzan Diaz

5 hours
All Levels
Materials Fee per student: Kit $110.00 plus tax/shipping ordered by student
Class Fee: $75.00

First we will discuss a bit about the history of shaker weaving and various materials that have been and can be used beside the cotton tape.  We will then weave shaker tape onto a stool purchased by the student from Shaker Workshops.  This will let the student bring home a beautiful and useful stool.  Each student will order their own kit which includes a stool in their choice of finish as well as the cotton tape in their choice of colors (2) or all one color if preferred.  I will have a variety of patterns available but nothing too complicated to start.  Checkerboard, Herringbone, etc.

Dimensions:  Height of stool is 15 1/2″;  Seat is 14″ x 18″

Bring sharp scissors, tack hammer, needle and thread in the color of the tape, and kit ordered by student from Shaker WorkshopsI will have a few other tools available for use.
